Sussex Tech Punches Ticket To Title

The Sussex Tech softball team is back in the state championship game after defeating Lake Forest 4-1. The Spartans worked out of an early bases loaded no out jam to cease control of the momentum of the game, and rolled to the win.

Tech wouldn’t wait very long before getting on the board after they got a RBI single from Madison Watson. The lead would hold til the top of the 2nd when Lake had a golden opportunity to blow the game open. Three straight walks to open the inning would load the bases with no out. But that’s when freshman pitcher Taylor Wroten showed her composer. She got an infield pop up for the first out, then struck out back to back batters to end the inning. With the momentum on their side, Sussex Tech would look to add to their lead.

Taylor Collins would get it started with a RBI bloop single to shallow right center. That brought Jakayla Sample to the plate, who would blast a deep shot to right for a RBI triple, scoring Collins. The Ravens then made it 4-0 after getting Elisha Marks laid down the bunt with runners on 1st and 2nd. The throw to 1st was wide of the bag, and that allowed Sample to score on the play.

The Spartans though weren’t going to go away that easily. The next batter hit a hard grounder to 3rd, where Brooke Glanden would field the play, fire to 1st for the out, where Kerrigan Simpson then turned and fired home for the double play and saved a run.

In the top of the 7th, Tech would start a rally after Mya Maddox blasted a shot to right center for a RBI double. After an infield single would put runners on the corners, the potential tying run would come to the plate in  Glanden. She would send a drive deep to center, which would be caught for the final out of the game at the warning track by Sample.

With the win, the Ravens advance to the State Championship game wher they will face Caravel on Saturday.
