On the Job: The Ice Cream Store

The official start to summer is right around the corner and we’ve already felt summer-like conditions on Delmarva. This week “On the Job” 47 ABC is helping serve up a summer classic, ice cream.

If you’ve ever been to Rehoboth Beach, strolling along Rehoboth Avenue, you may have noticed “The Ice Cream Store”. At first glance, it has an unassuming exterior. But this narrow storefront is hard to miss since the entire front façade is lined with their 100 flavors of ice cream. And it’s now world famous after doing a couple major TV appearances from the Food Network to the Today Show.

For the past 46 years, the Ice Cream Store has been all about the wacky flavors, which are all made in Hockessin. Some of the weirder varieties include booger, bacon, spinach salad, and breakfast burrito. The man behind the shop, and most of the flavors, Chip Hearn.

Hearn tells 47 ABC, “I think that part of the game is you have to have fun, ice cream is about having fun. To have fun you have to be doing it two ways with ice cream, one is eating some of it and tasting some of it, the second is making that customer smile.”

First, we were introduced to our boss for the day, Neli Stoyanova. Before getting to work, Chip said it’s important to know what you’re working with and be familiar with the flavors.

Currently, the Ice Cream Store offers a few political flavors including “Trump Tower”, “Feel the Bern”, and “Hilary Vanilla”. A few other flavors on their list include, strawberry, peanut butter, and bacon. The Ice Cream store also offers a flavor called ghost pepper. It’s so hot that you have to sign a waiver before you try it and no one under the age of 18 or over the age of 65 is permitted to taste it.

Next, it was time to make some fresh waffle cones. First, you must pour a small amount of batter right in the center of the hot griddle, then you close it and let it cook for 1 minute. After it’s finished cooking you have to act fast in rolling it because it cools very quickly.

Next, we had to check to see which ice creams needed to be restocked. Of course one of the stores most popular flavors needed to be restocked, the bacon flavor. And after placing it on the cart, you have to tell the rest of the employees in the store. After serving a few customers, our job was done.

Next week “On the Job”, 47 ABC will be hooking up with Wheels Luxury Taxi service to get behind the wheel.
