Ocean City gives police more power

Ocean City Police officers now have the power to arrest you if you repeatedly violate municipal infractions, such as smoking in a prohibited area. Monday night the city council voted unanimously to not only pass the ordinance, but also voted to pass it as an emergency ordinance, meaning it goes into effect immediately.

The arrest could lead to jail time according to Ocean City Police spokeswoman, Lindsay Richards.

Richards explained the person would be charged with a misdemeanor, which can carry up to a $1,000 fine or up to 90 days in jail.

She said the new ordinance is also a way to ensure boardwalk performers are following the new laws that require them to sign up through city hall and perform in a designated area.

“It just gives our officers just one extra minor step to be able to make sure our laws are being followed,” Richards said.

During the meeting local activist Tony Christ spoke out against the proposed ordinance, voicing his concerns to the council and mayor.

Christ has also filed for an injunction in federal court to try and put a stop to this.

However those 47 ABC spoke to on the boardwalk feel differently from Christ, and don’t mind the police having the extra authority.

“If a police officer or someone of authority has asked me once already or twice , then yeah I think that they should be able to do something about it cause like I said I’m an adult and I’m supposed to be able to follow rules,” said Kelsey Alderton.

“I mean it may be overstepping boundaries a little bit, but I think it’s fair,” said Eric Boris.

Under the new ordinance officers will be able to use their discretion as to whether they want to arrest someone or give them a citation.
