Low primary election voter turn-out in Accomack Co.

The National Defense Authorization Act has passed the Senate. However, according to the White House, President Obama plans to veto it.

The White House has a number of oppositions to the $602 billion defense policy bill. This includes it’s ban on closing Guantanamo Bay and limiting the size of the President’s national security council staff.

Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee supported the legislation on Tuesday. He cited wins for Virginia through funding to maintain the state’s carrier fleet.

He continues,”There’s strong provisions with respect to ship building platforms generally. The Virginia class submarine program which is also built at the ship yard, is in a strong position in this year’s NDAA, which is good news for the nation’s defense, good news for Hampton roads, and the spectacular ship yard workers who build these subs.”

During committee debate, Senator Kaine offered an amendment that would create a commission to study the challenged areas in the Department of Defense. His amendment wasn’t adopted.
