Gold team holds off Blue in 36th Annual Senior Game

Caesar Rodney’s Rosa’lynn Burton put on a base-running display and scored two runs as the Gold team defeated the Blue squad in the 36th annual Blue-Gold Senior All-Star game.

The Blue team struck first, when in the bottom of the first inning, AI DuPont’s Jenna Bessel scored off a fielder’s choice via DMA’s Kylie Quirk. The Gold team would respond by scoring the next three runs of the contest, highlighted by a Morgan Dodge (Polytech) bloop single to score Sussex Tech’s Taylor Collins.

After a couple of scoreless innings, the Blue squad would cut the lead to just one, when Ky’Lesha Neal (Indian River) sent a sac fly deep to right to score Kaylee Hazewski (Red Lion). Gold would open things up in the top of the 6th, matching their game total producing three more runs in the frame, highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles by Padua’s Kiersten Fallers and Polytech’s Whitney DeMora. With a 6-2 lead, Gold may have thought they had the game in the bag.

But after getting one back in the bottom half of the sixth, Blue made things interesting in the ninth with back-to-back RBI singles, to cut the lead to 6-5. Blue would then have the bases loaded, with just one out and an opportunity to get the walk off win, until Gold shortstop Kenda Ziemba made a great catch tracking backwards, to record the final, dramatic out of the game.
