The current president of William & Mary, Taylor Reveley, announced Graves’ death in a letter to the school community Friday. Graves was the 23rd president of William & Mary and led the school from 1971 to 1985. He was 91.

The school says that after leaving the university Graves was the director of the Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library in Wilmington, Delaware, and later became the director of Wilmington’s Grand Opera House.
