Deputy reportedly injured while trying to take man into custody

Xavier Townsend, 19

Members of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office say a deputy was injured while reportedly trying to break up a fight among family members.

Deputies were called to the scene around 5:30 P.M. on Whitman Ave. in Salisbury on Tuesday for a reported altercation.

It was there, deputies say Xavier Townsend, 19, was engaged in an argument with a family member that turned physical.

Police say Townsend began assaulting another family member while yelling and disturbing what they call a normally quiet neighborhood.

The deputy reportedly attempted to place Townsend under arrest but he resisted the deputy.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the deputy suffered a knee injury and had his uniform ripped during Townsend’s arrest. He was eventually restrained, police say, and charged with second degree Assault, Disorderly Conduct, and Resisting Arrest.

Townsend was then reportedly taken to the Wicomico County Detention Center in lieu of $25,000 bond.
