Delaware South Battles But Falls Short To Philly Catholic

The Delaware South team bowed out of the Carpenter Cup Friday morning when they battled but fell short to Philadelphia Catholic 5-2. Delaware South committed four costly error and left the bases loaded with no out in the 7th and that would ultimately cost them the game.
The teams would be in a bit of a pitchers duel early until Philly South finally broke through in the top of the 2nd. They would string together back to back singles and a walk to work the bases loaded. Marquise Wood then sent a RBI single to left for the first run of the game, scoring Langston Livingston. That was followed by another RBI single, this time from Gregg Sywulak that would plate Gregg Grandelli. A RBI fielders choice would cap off the 3 run inning.
But Delaware South would fight their way back. Appoquinimink’s Brett Willett would blast a ball to the fence in left center for a RBI double, scoring Polytech’s Carter Chasanov. He would get thrown out trying to take 3rd though to end the inning. Polytech’s Joey Haass then came in on relief to pitch, and would toss a couple scoreless innings with a couple strike outs. Once his day was done, Delaware South turned to Dover’s Garrett Lawson, and he would work his way through Philly Catholic’s lineup as well. Delaware South then made it a 1 run game after getting a RBI fielders choice from Riley Klepacki that scored Smyrna’s Jared Gillis.
But even though they were knocking on the door, they could never break through. Delaware South would get runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs before the runner on 3rd would get caught for the 3rd out. Then in the 7th, they would work the bases loaded with no outs. Two consecutive strike outs and a fly out though would end the threat.
Philly Catholic would eventually start to take advantage of Delaware South’s errors to. They would work a couple runners on, before a line drive would be smokes to 3rd, and the relay to 2nd would be wide of the bad, allowing a run to score. Then a pass ball would bring in another run to make it 5-2. Could’ve been worse too, after Cape’s David Erickson forced a pop up with runners on. He would make the catch, and try and pick off the runner at 2nd, but the ball would find the outfield. Smyrna’s Nolan Henderson would fire a bullet from center field though and catch the runner by four steps at home plate to save a run.
The bats couldn’t get going at the bottom of the frame though as Delaware South saw their tournament run come to an end. Still, the team managed their first tournament win in 10 years with their first round win on Monday, and earned the respect of a lot of teams in attendance.
