Cape’s Dynasty Continues With 8th Straight Title

The Cape Henlopen girls lacrosse team continues to add to what will go down as one of, if not the greatest dynasty in state history as the Vikings clinched their incredible 8th straight DIAA Championship with a 16-4 win over Tower Hill. The Vikings were in a tight game at 403 early, but ended the game on a 12-1 run to clinch the win.

The Vikings came out strong, wanting to give their head coach PJ Kesmodel a birthday to remember, in his final game coaching in his legendary high school coaching career. Cape would strike first after Lindsay Monigle found Cailey Thornburg with a beautiful pass, as Thornburg would put away the shot for the first of her four scores. After the Hillers had an answer, Chloe Schaefer would add aother score for the Vikings as they pulled back out in front. Abby Manning would then be able to find the back of the net for Tower Hill as the back and forth game continued. Lizzie Frederick then would set up Mallory Jones with a great pass to beat the double team as the Vikings would take a 4-3 lead at the midway point of the first half.

The rest of the game wasn’t nearly as close.

Evelyn Shoop would find the back of the net twice in the first half as Cape was able to take a 7-3 lead into the break. Shoop then won back to back draws to open the second half, as the lead quickly reached 6. As the flood gates opened, Cape would find a way to put away the game. Frederick would add another score to finish her hat trick, while Alia Marshall would be able to find the back of the net down the stretch as well to help close it out.

The win sends out yet another senior class that won 4 state titles in their time, while never losing a game against an instate team.
