“Bucks For Books” partnership benefits 250 students

About 250 kids from Prince Street Elementary can forward to summer break without worrying that they won’t have books to read thanks to the Bucks For Books program.
The program is a partnership with the elementary school and James M. Bennett High School’s National Honor Society. It collects gently used and new books during the spring and hold a free book fair for first and second graders.
Teresa McCain, advisor for the JMB’s National Honor Society, says they were able to collect about 1,700 books this year.
This is the third year the program has been around; however, they used to give out between four and five books per student. Each student was to take home six free books on Thursday.
“It all happens here in the younger grades,” says McCain. “If they can master reading in K, 1, 2, then they will be successful as they grow older and so being a high school teacher, we want as many successful readers as we can coming to high school so we want to do our part help them, help them succeed.”
All of the extra books collected will be used for next year’s drive. McCain says the National Honor Society will take donations year-round.
