UPDATE: American Legion Post 91 suffers extensive fire damage

Extensive damage at an American Legion in Cambridge after fire ripped through the building’s second floor yesterday. The building from the outside contradicts what it looks like on the inside, which we were not permitted to get video of.

At the time of the fire yesterday morning, 5 or 6 people were actually inside and unaware that the fire burning one floor above them. After a few hours, a fire alarm went off and they evacuated. Deputy State Fire Marshal Kirby Travers says they’re still working to nail down an exact cause.

Travers tells 47 ABC, “It doesn’t look bad from the outside, but the inside is really a mess, it’s really a mess especially on the banquet room end. There’s definitely a lot of repairs that have to be made.”

Travers say a neighbor reported lightning striking the building at around 11 A.M. It’s suspected that, that might have been the cause, but it is still under investigation. No one was injured in the blaze and damages are estimated at $900,000.
