Rehabilitated baby seal released into ocean

Wednesday was an exciting day for a young seal pup named Megatron, as he was released back into the ocean in Ocean City after being in rehab since February. The young pup, who is just about a year old, was found by the Merr Institute on the beach in Lewes, Delaware back in February.

Officials say at the time, he was underweight, had skin lesions and was dehydrated. The Merr Institute kept an eye on him for a day, but he wasn’t getting any better so they then called the National Aquarium to take him in. And after 11 weeks in rehab, Megatron gained 27 pounds and was ready to be released.

47 ABC spoke with Jennifer Dittmar who works with Animal Rescue at the National Aquarium in Baltimore and she says, “It’s so rewarding to be able to rehabilitate these animals and release them back into their natural environment. Were very excited to be able to get him back out and do what he would normally do.”

Dittmar also tells 47 ABC, come June 16th, they’ll be releasing a turtle in Assateague National Park just in time for national sea turtle week.
