Operation We Care sets new record

Operation We Care (OWC), a local non-profit dedicated to supporting our military and law enforcement, set a new record for themselves by packing 815 care packages Sunday at their semi-annual pack party.

The care packages are sent over seas to our military personnel and consist of personal hygiene items, snacks and other materials.

On hand Sunday to help with the event were a slew of local and state officials, including Sen. Addie Eckardt, Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis and Salisbury Mayor Jake Day.

The preparation for an event of this scale starts months in advance.

“There’s a lot of work that gets put into it, we’ll take a little bit of a break after this one and about the middle of June we’ll start back up again getting ready for November. But it’s a lot of hands involved in this operation literally, many different things, decorating boxes, collecting donations doing fundraisers, we spent almost $29,000 last year in postage for 1,800 and some care packages that we did, it’s year long effort,” said founder Jeff Merritt.
