Milford company receives 62K in USDA funding

The Milford Grain Company has been granted 62,000 dollars by the USDA for their efforts in sustainable energy.

The company receives and dries grains from Kent and Sussex counties, which are then shipped out.

To get this grant, general manager Marcus Hammond says they had to prove they were reducing energy and saving costs.

Last year, the company reportedly replaced a dryer which had been in place since 1974. Hammond say the new dryer allowed them to use about 50,000 gallons of propane to dry one million bushels.

With their old dryer, they only able to dry 700,000 bushels for 62,000 gallons of propane.

“So that’s a 12,000 gallon difference and we dried more product, so right there alone that’s saving from emissions, from using the LP gas and it’s also saving money,” he says.

According to Hammond, the grant covers about 25 percent of the new dryer’s overall costs.

The USDA also visited three other grant recipients on Delmarva Friday:

– Wings Landing Farms in Preston, MD: recipient of $143,922

– Hoffman Irrigation Service & Repair in Federalsburg, MD: recipient of $26,925

– L&J Farms in Harrington, DE; recipient of $43,525
