“Mighty Mo” gun finally settled in Delaware

A barrel of one the main guns that sat on the World War Two battleship the U.S.S. Missouri also known as the “Mighty Mo” has now reached a final resting place in Delaware.

In Cape Henlopen the Fort Miles Historical Association say they began looking for a gun from a warship to bring to Fort Miles in 1998.

In 2011 they found the the middle barrel of the Mighty Mo, a turret gun.

Since then they raised over a million dollars to both build an artillery park at Cape Henlopen and make the Mighty Mo barrel the main attraction.

Officials explained its significance today.

“We wanted this barrel in particular, this is the very barrel that the Japanese delegation had to walk past to surrender to General MacArthur on September 2, 1945. The Japanese delegation surrendered on the quarter deck of the Missouri and this barrel was on her at this time,” said Dr. Gary Wray of the Ft. Miles Historical Assoc.

We’re told this is unique because there are no longer any more of these parts left.

Officials say construction of the base surrounding the barrel should be done in June.

At that point the exhibit will be open to the public.
