The Virginia Department of Elections reports that J. “Arthur” Leonard has secured 54.34% of the votes to be the town of Chincoteague’s Mayor-elect.
Leonard will take over, as incumbent Jack Tarr announced he would not run again after 17 years in office.
Mayor-elect Leonard is a lifelong Chincoteague resident and co-owner of the Refuge Inn. He has been a boat captain for 30 years and operates tours through Daisey’s Island Cruises.
Of all Accomack County towns, only Chincoteague has a large enough population to require candidates for town offices to file petitions with at least 125 qualified signatures of registered voters.
