Inaugural ‘Haircuts 4 Our Homeless’ event a success

A haircut, something that most of us take for granted, can do wonders for someones self-image, and that was the thought behind the inaugural Haircuts 4 Our Homeless event that was held Sunday at Headquarters Live! in Salisbury, Md.
The mastermind behind the event, Zina Brechbill. Brechbill said at the event that she had long wondered how she could give back to those in need before stumbling on the idea to offer free haircuts.
“I would see people walking around by themselves and I would just think to myself what is it I can do to help them,” Brechbill said. “So I thought, well one thing I do know how to do is cut hair, maybe we can get together and cut hair for the community.”
The first step Brechbill said, was finding enough stylists to do the event. She put out a call for help, 36 hair stylists responded and showed up for the event.
“It’s really humbling, that’s for sure. A little thing like just getting their hair trimmed just made their, probably their whole week,” said Kelly Knock a stylist from Designer’s Edge. “It feels really good to be able to just give that little thing back to them.”
For the event, Brechbill partnered up with the non-profit “From Roots to Wings”, which allowed them to receive a $1,500 grant from the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore.
Brechbill said the grant money allowed the event to become a reality.
As part of the event, those in need also got free food, clothes and women were allowed to take handbags stuffed with personal hygiene items.
Those who came, were appreciative of the help.
“I feel fresh and renewed, I feel rebirthed, yes, I love it,” said Antre Lewis after getting his haircut.
“I came over here and got it all cut off, just so I could show, you know, how good it’ll make a person feel, I feel like a million bucks right now,” said Mardi Dayton.
Those with the event say the hope is that people might be inspired to think, what can they do to help out. As for haircuts for our homeless, they say that will be back next year.
