GOP asks court for special session on felon voting rights

(AP) – Republican legislative leaders want the Virginia Supreme Court to hold a special session to consider their lawsuit against Gov. Terry McAuliffe over voting rights for felons.
GOP leaders filed a lawsuit in the Virginia Supreme Court Monday in an effort to reverse McAuliffe’s order restoring the voting rights of more than 200,000 felons.
In a motion filed Tuesday, Republicans asked the court to hold a special session to hear the matter or allow it to be heard when it meets for its session starting June 6.
Republicans want the matter decided by August 25 to ensure there’s enough time to cancel felons’ registrations if the court sides with the GOP.
Election officials said that as of Tuesday, 4,935 people who had their rights restored last month have registered to vote.
