Fight nights: Boxing Junior Olympics comes to Eastern Shore

The Main Street Gym in Salisbury is the host of this year’s USA Junior Olympics Regional Championship.

About 140 participants are expected to compete Friday night through Sunday.

The athletes, all between the ages of 12 through 17, had their official weigh in at the Hampton Inn in Salisbury on Friday morning.

A manager at the Hampton Inn tells 47ABC she’s unsure of exactly how many families are staying at the hotel; however, the hotel has reportedly reached full capacity this weekend.

Hal Chernoff, a head coach at the Main Street Gym, this competition includes participants from a number of states including Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania.

“They’re super hardworking kids and unlike a lot of sports…kids play football, soccer and whatnot, and it’s seasonal,” Chernoff says. “They train hard for it and they move on. Most of these kids you see here are in boxing, day in and day out. Month after month. Year after year. This is their sport.”

The starting times for the tournaments are 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday. We’re told Sunday morning’s final bouts will take place at 9 a.m.

A one day ticket will cost $20 and $35 for all three days.
