Dem. senators urge for Title IX clarification

U.S. senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, both of Virginia, along with 38 senate democrats are urging the Department of Education to further clarify the scope of the Title IX act.

Title IX prohibits any educational institution that receives federal funding from discriminating on the basis of sex; however in recent years, it has also prohibited discrimination based on gender identity.

In a letter sent this week, the senators have asked for further clarification on what the act means for transgender and gender non-conforming students.

The letter reads in part quote “We strongly believe that it is our responsibility, not just as senators, but as adults,  to protect our children and young, and to help them flourish.”
