DART looking to add electric buses to fleet

DART is looking to get 6 electric buses added to it’s fleet in Kent County through a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration.

$55 million dollars will go specifically towards the FTA’s Low and No Emission or Low-No bus program. They’re essentially electric buses.

Transportation contributes about 27 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Delaware is looking to decrease their contributions to that number. They don’t have any buses that rely solely on electricity in the state.

John Sisson, CEO of Delaware Transit Corporation says, “They’re really quiet and the emissions are really good. What transportation experts see when they start running these types of buses is that people are curious. They tend to have a bump in ridership from people getting on and wanting to try them out.”

DART will be submitting their grant application by the end of the week. We’re told they’ll find out if they get approved or not within the next three to four months.
