Craft beer industry continues to thrive in Delaware

Craft beer is cementing its reputation as a productive Delaware industry.

Within the past decade the number of breweries that call Delaware home has more than doubled according to the Brewer’s Association.

“with the industry being as successful as it has over the past, call it, ten years, it really has become a destination where people want to come and see how different breweries operate,” said Ryan Telle, the VP of Marketing at Fordham & Dominion Brewery.

Telle says industry will likely continue to grow. He says at least three to four new breweries as well as an in-state malt distributor are in the works. Possibly improving previous rankings that already list Delaware in the top ten in per capita economic impact and gallons of beer produced per person 21 and older (Brewer’s Association). He says relationships within the craft brew community are key to a thriving industry.

“the camaraderie in the industry is probably what’s been the most important and most influential thing that I’ve seen progress,” Telle said. “it’s always good to become friends with these people because you trade resources and vendor information and things like that.”

It’s not just the people in Delaware powering the craft beer boom it’s also the state itself. Friendly to business the first state is a hot spot for breweries to set up shop. Cities like Dover are happy to have them, and happy that so much of the operation stays local. Fordham & Dominion employs nearly 40 people and 70% of sales happen in Delaware.

“it just enhances the culture of our city.” Said Bill Neaton, Economic Development Director for the City of Dover, “they bring a lot of tourism to the area. They are a destination. They have a tasting room, they have tours.”

As for what the future holds on the state’s craft brew front Telle expects competition to increase. But he says there’s plenty of demand and he doesn’t see anyone getting driven out of business.

Various breweries such as a Fordham & Dominion, wineries and distilleries are all featured on a trail up and down the state. On Tuesday, state officials added to that list announcing ten new locations on the Delaware Beer, Wine and Spirits Trail.

The tourist attraction aimed at highlighting the different alcoholic offerings and facilities in the state now features seven new locations in Kent and Sussex counties.

“It gives them a lot more options and we’re really excited because we’ve added some new options in New Castle County. Sussex County has always been very well populated with plenty of breweries.” Said Linda Parkowsi, Delaware Tourism Director.
