Controversial construction ongoing in Lewes

Construction on Savannah Rd. in Lewes is causing quite the stir among community members.  The project, according to DELDOT’s website is to increase safety for cyclists and pedestrians.  However some believe it’s not doing that at all.

The project is taking the current stretch of road, and adding bike lanes as well as a traffic calming island in the middle.  Bryan Hecksher owns a business along Savannah Rd. and says it simply won’t be wide enough.  After going to Facebook to voice his frustrations, he soon found out many others had similar concerns.

Delaware Speaker of the House Peter Schwartzkopf even commented on one thread calling it “A Fiasco”.  Hecksher started to put together a petition because he says it could be a matter of life or death for pedestrians. “My goal is to work with people for a solution. I’m not trying to fight progress, I’m not trying to fight city hall. I’m trying to work together for a main cause and that’s to save somebody’s life” Hecksher tells 47ABC.  He adds that there will be no room for an ambulance were to come through the stretch of raod, something he says he sees about 10 times a day with Beebe Medical Center just down the road.
