Christian Shelter in need of help ahead of summer months

The Christian Shelter on Barclay Street is reminding the community to donate if they can, especially as summer months approach.

The shelter has 12 beds for men, 14 for women, and 11 family rooms for people with children; however, the shelter relies solely on donations.

Funds are used to pay for electricity, gas, water and sewer, staffing, taxes and insurance, and building maintenance among other costs.

Brother Jim Barnes is an administrator assistant at the shelter and tells 47ABC that July and August are typically the busiest months. According to Brother Barnes, this is because of the need for emergency shelters.

Barnes tells us there’s more awareness surrounding the problem of homeless in the winter time, but it’s not always the case for the summer.

“People go on vacation and the schools close and so children are all out of school and people don’t think much about homelessness in the summer and so there’s not much resources available,” he explains.

Donations are always welcome, but we’re told volunteers are equally as important.
