Bayhealth breaks ground on Milford health campus

A nearly $300 million investment, the largest of its kind in Sussex County, officially broke ground in Milford on Tuesday. We’re told it’s all being done in an effort to change the way healthcare is delivered in southern Delaware.

Terry Murphy, CEO of Bayhealth says, “We’ve done a lot of work and pre- work before the ground breaking today. We wanted to just redesign with something that’s very patient centric, all private rooms, expanded OR’s and emergency room based.”

The construction is for Bayhealth’s new Milford health campus. It’ll be right off of route one and stand six stories high. Nemours Children’s Health System will also provide specialized care for kids and older adults in a separate building on the campus.

Physicians say certain cancer and rehabilitation patients will no longer have to make the trek to Baltimore or Philly to get treatment. They’ll be able to be seen right in southern Delaware.

On top of the expected health benefits, the construction of the health campus will be creating more than 1,800 jobs.

Mayor Bryan Shupe says, “The impact of this new health campus is going to be incredible on our economy. The families that come here will be visiting our restaurants, will be looking for new shops, they’ll be looking to spend time in our downtown.”

The health campus is slated to open in 2019.
