Zebron & Grogan Dazzle, CR Prevails In Extras

Baseball is a game that can be played many different ways, and on Tuesday it was played at one of its highest levels. Colonel Richardson gutted out a 3-1 win in extras over Saint Michaels to move into 1st place of the the Bayside North. The game quickly developed into a pitchers duel, as Colonels’ Jake Zebron and Saints Matt Grogan were dealing, until finally Zebron did as most damage with his bat, to help improve the Colonels to 6-0, while the Saints fell to 4-1.

The Saints would be the first to threaten after Andrew Risher doubled down the left field line with 1 out in the 2nd, but Zebron would work his way out of the jam to keep it scoreless. Both sophomores continued to give up the occasional base runner, but were able to work their way out of it without any harm headed to the 7th. There, the Saints would eventually get a runner on 3rd, before a line drive was smoked towards Buchanan, but he would make the incredible catch to take the game to extras. There, the Colonels would finally start a rally after Jacob Hicks would hit a slow roller to first, that he would beat out for an infield single. After he took 2nd off a wild pitch, the Saints would chose to walk Jaret Bennett to bring up to bat Zebron. That’s when he would deliver the biggest hit of the game, sending the go-ahead RBI base knock to left, scoring Zebron. Bennett would then steal 3rd, followed by a walk to get runners on the corners. Garrett Nepert would then provide the insurance, blasting a 2 RBI double to center to push the lead to 3-0.

The Saints weren’t ready to give up just yet after getting out of the frame. After a walk got the leadoff man on, they would get a single from Trent Saunders to get runners on the corners. CR would then go to their bullpen, and had the ball off to Bennett. After getting a strike out for the first out of the inning, Nathan Howeth would send a shot to center to bring in a run, and bring the game tying run to 1st. Bennett though, would settle in and close the door, getting back to back strike outs to end it.

Colonel Richardson returns to action on Wednesday when they host North Dorchester, while Saint Michaels host Pocomoke on Thursday.
