Young bakers have their own business

Leroy and Jacob Stafford aren’t like most middle schoolers. Rather than watching TV and playing on Ipads, they run their own business in their free time. The brothers, ages 13 & 11, are the proud owners of E.C. Sweetery. Their mom, Kari, tells 47ABC “they’re the youngest entrepreneurs in the state of Delaware to hold a business license. Even though it’s in my name the business is technically theirs.” Stafford says the only reason the license is in her name, is because her sons are too young to legally own it.
The idea all started 4 years ago, on Leroy’s 9th birthday, when he got a gift from his mom. Leroy tells 47ABC ” I got this little mini cupcake maker – and I was like – “what am I gonna do with this” – so I was like – oh – dang nabbit – I can go sell these outside!” Jacob, Leroy’s younger brother by 2 years, added that when they went to sell their sweets, they made $165 the first week, and they haven’t looked back since.
As they were reeling in the dough, it got the business tycoons thinking of how to expand their brand. They sat down with their mom and started thinking of all the different combinations of cupcakes they can make. What started as chocolate and vanilla, expanded to strawberry, banana, chocolate mocha, and blueberry oatmeal. It doesn’t stop at just cupcakes either, they make cakes, parfait’s, buffet shooters (which is like a little parfait in a shot glass) and pretty much anything that you can put in an oven. In fact, E.C. Sweetery’s slogan is “if you can dream it…we can bake it!”
Although the business has been successful for the past 4 years (and it has, they’re looking at options to take their business out of their own kitchen and set up shop in a commercial location), Leroy and Jacob’s mom says it’s about more than money. She says “it’s something that not only us 3 do, but now it’s including all of the other children in the house and it’s building memories that we wouldn’t have had.”
