Warning of identity theft during peak tax season

The tax deadline is right around the corner, and as we get busy filing our taxes before April 18th, it also seems criminals are ramping up their efforts. A new warning from Comptroller Franchot’s office is showing phishing scams targeting taxpayers.
The scams reportedly target Maryland taxpayers, as well as residents from Washington, D.C., and parts of Virginia. The scammers use tax fraud as a scare tactic to trick victims into divulging their personal information. They contact the potential victims via e-mail or phone. Officials say nobody will be asked to release their personal information via phone or e-mail.
Comptroller Franchot also warns of a similar scam ongoing regarding W-2 statements. Employees at certain businesses have reportedly received suspicious e-mails impersonating company officials and asking for copies of information.
The Comptroller’s office reminds taxpayers that neither them or the IRS will not ask for confidential information.
