Vikings Shock Seahawks With Late Run

The Cape Henlopen girls lacrosse team pulled out an incredible win Monday night, when they overcame a 2 goal deficit with 5 minutes to play to defeat Stephen Decatur 9-8. The win improves the Vikings to 6-0, while the loss drops the Seahawks to 4-1.
The teams would exchange goals early on before the Vikings would close out the half on a strong run. Lizzie Frederick would find Lindsay Monigle for a score, then she would add one herself with 3 seconds left to help Cape take a 5-3 lead into the break. The Seahawks would then respond, led by Lexie Van Kirk. She would score three straight times to help her team claw back to pull even in the match. Then Victoria Kerkovich would add an unassisted score to help Decatur grab a 8-6 lead with 5 minutes to left, and seemingly give them the win. But Cape wasn’t ready to give in just yet. They would get a score to get back within 1, then just over a minute later tie the match after Evelyn Shoop found Cailey Thornburg for the game tying score. Decatur then had a chance to take the lead off a free position shot, but Cape’s keeper came up with a great save and would give the possession to the Vikings. They would call timeout to draw up a play, which lead to another Shoop to Thornburg score with 30 seconds to play, which would give them the lead.
Cape returns to action on Thursday when they host Sussex Academy, while Decatur travels to Kent County on Friday.
