UPDATE: Man involved in fatal firefighter shooting released

The man who police say shot two Prince George’s County firefighters on Friday night has been released from custody, facing no charges.

ABC-affiliate WJLA reports “the man claims he felt he was the victim of a home invasion and thought he was firing in self-defense, according to sources.”

37-year-old John Ulmschneider was killed and 19-year-old Kevin Swain remains hospitalized, as they tried to respond to a call for a medical welfare check at the man’s home Friday night.

Ulmschneider, a 13-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department, was reportedly shot in the chest and taken to a hospital where he later died.

Swain is currently listed in serious condition.

The Sykesville Fire Department tweeted Saturday night “Just visited with Kevin. His message to all: “I’m alright.”

According to a post on Prince George’s County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady, John “Skillet” Ulmschneider lived in St. Mary’s County.

The spokesman continued to say that the Fire and EMS Department was formed back in 1970 in Prince George’s County. According to Brady, the department never had a firefighter shot while on duty until now.

The Prince George’s County Police Department and the State’s Attorney are still investigating the incident.

Memorial services for Ulmschneider have been finalized. The visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at St. John’s Parish in Hollywood, MD.

The funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 also at St. John’s Parish.

A “repast” will be held to celebrate “Skillet’s” life following the funeral mass at the Hollywood Fire Department.

He leaves behind a wife and 2-year-old daughter.
