Trooper dies after Richmond bus station shooting

According to Virginia State Police, a State Trooper has died from his injuries after being shot in a Richmond Greyhound station Thursday.

State Police have identified the Trooper as Chad P. Dermyer, a 2014 graduate of the Virginia State Police Academy, and a former U.S. Marine.

Virginia State Police say in a release that Trooper Dermyer was among approximately a dozen state police troopers participating in a specialized training on criminal interdiction practices., who completed the classroom instruction and were conducting field practicals at the time the shooting occurred.

According to the release, Dermyer’s encounter with the male subject was part of the training, and Dermyer was in uniform at the time of the shooting.

Investigators say Dermyer approached a male suspect at the front doors of the bus station today, when he was shot several times by the man.

Police say two nearby Troopers returned fire, as the man moved into the terminal. During the course of gunfire, the suspect and two bystanders were shot.

State Police say the suspect eventually was taken into custody and died from his injuries at VCU Medical Center. The two bystanders were reportedly treated for non-life threatening injuries.

According to State Police, the man’s identification is known, but Troopers are still in the process of notifying his next of kin.

Trooper Dermyer is survived by his wife and two young children.
