SU Prof.: 2016 election getting more voters involved

The 2016 election has made quite an impact on the voting public on a local level because there’s a sense that Maryland and Delaware really matter this primary season which isn’t often the case.

Salisbury University political science professor Doctor Sara Surak tells us that because off all the buzz generated by the candidates it’s likely that we see more voters in the primaries.
“People are talking about it more, it means that people are interested. Our voting turn-out rates haven’t been as high as one might expect when there’s so much going on but at the very least there’s a lot of discourse which is really important in a democracy. People are talking about what’s going on and people are more activated and more interested than we’ve seen in previous years.” said Surak.

In a typical election year Surak says primary elections are often overlooked because each party’s nominee would have already been selected by this point.
