State employees raise more than $4 million for charity

(AP) – State employees have donated more than $4 million to charities as part of their annual Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Thursday that this year’s haul was a 7 percent increase over last year’s state employee charity drive.

The governor says more than 100,000 state employees donated to the campaign.

The University of Virginia was the state agency that raised the most donations. Employees at the school donated nearly $1 million.

State employees have given nearly $47 million to more than 1,000 participating charities since 1997.

McAuliffe says the “enormous generosity” of the state employees is “further proof that Virginia is home to the best civil servants on the globe.”
