National work zone awareness week educates drivers

This week, April 11-15, is national work zone awareness week. A week designated to educate drivers about the dangers of driving irresponsibly through a construction zone. The state of Delaware also holds it’s own campaign within the nationally recognized week, with the first state’s slogan this year as “Don’t be that driver”.
47ABC talked to DELDOT spokesman Bob King, who says many drivers don’t obey simple rules while driving through work zones. King says speeding, tailgating, and changing lanes are all infractions that will get a “That Driver” designation. While slowing down and maintaining a safe following distance will help keep construction workers safe, King says safety awareness in a work zone will help keep drivers and passengers safe too. King told 47ABC “in 2014 there were 669 fatalities nationwide – just in work zones. Of those fatalities 82% were actually passengers and drivers within the vehicle.”
