Md. kicks off early voting

Thursday marked the first day Marylanders hit the polls in 2016 election season.
Early voting lasts through Thursday, April 21. There is one polling center per county here on the Eastern Shore with 67 election precincts in the state overall.
In Wicomico County, there are five contests voters will see on the ballot: U.S. President, U.S. Senate, U.S. Congress District One, a delegate to go to their party’s convention, and an alternate delegate.
Anthony Gutierrez, director of the Wicomico County Board Of Elections, says there were 1,350 early voters in 2012 and 1,946 in 2014.
As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, he says 281 people voted at the Wicomico County Youth and Civic Center. Overall, there was a steady of voters on the first day of early voters.
“It’s not looking as much for the primary election so far,” he says. “There’s a lot of interest in the national contest and with an open U.S. senate seat and the congressional race, that’s going to generate interest too.”
Polling centers open at 10 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. between April 14 and 21.
