Laurel couple explains support for Salisbury Kidney Walk

The Salisbury Kidney Walk is next month. Until then, every week 47 ABC we’ll be hearing from the people lacing up their shoes to participate this year.
We met Richard and Cris Henderson on Tuesday. This year will be their third walk.
Richard first discovered he had Renal Cell Cancer, or RCC, at the end of 2012. Shortly after, Richard learned his other kidney was only functioning at about twenty-five percent due to long-term diabetes, hypertension, and years of ibuprofen use.
His wife Cris planned on being a paired donor, but Richard’s cancer returned and spread to both lungs. Richard describes his current condition as stable. He says the journey has been emotionally and physically overwhelming.
However, he believes the walk is a way to recognize how far he’s come and encourage others to keep pushing.
Richard goes on, “It’s kind of our way of giving back to the people that have helped us along the way.”
Cris says, “Before we were on this journey, we didn’t anything about kidneys, but now it’s a word every day. We just want to help our local community get some awareness too.”
The Salisbury Kidney Walk is scheduled for May 15th. Click here for registration information.
