Fruitland house fire caused by portable space heater

A space heater is being blamed for a house fire in Fruitland over the weekend.

The Maryland Office if the State Fire Marshal says the first started just before 2:00 PM on Saturday, at a one story home on Moonglow Road. After the occupants discovered the blaze, 25 firefighters from the Fruitland Volunteer Fire Department responded, and had the flames under control in 30 minutes.

No injuries were reported. Damages are estimated to total $100,000.

Investigators say the blaze started in a bedroom of the home, and was caused by a portable space heater. The fire has been ruled as accidental. Officials say the family was displaced, and being assisted by the American Red Cross.
