Another local county has announced their teacher of the year. Dorchester County Public Schools says on Tuesday night they announced both their Teacher of the Year and First Class Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Jennifer Wingate, First Grade Teacher at South Dorchester School was chosen as the Teacher of the Year for 2016 – 2017, while Ms. Amy Stoops, a PreKindergarten Teacher at Hurlock Elementary School, was selected as the First Class Teacher of the Year for 2016-2017.

Wingate, who has been with DCPS since 2009, will now move to the Maryland State competition. The school systems says First Class Teacher of the Year is a locally sponsored recognition, for a first year teacher who has demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication. There were apparently 11 nominees for Teacher of the Year and 9 nominees for the First Class Teacher of the Year, representing schools throughout the school system.

The committee who selects the winner is made up of community members, past honorees for both awards, and current staff.
