Va. voters head to polls on Super Tuesday

371 people voted in a dual primary at Arcadia High School, which is one of 17 voting precincts in Accomack County, as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Virginia was one of a dozen states that held contests on Super Tuesday, whose outcomes could go a long way in determining each party’s eventual winner.

Recent poll numbers suggest Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are leading in the state, but some Accomack County voters say Trump is not the only candidate they have their eyes on.

Wattsville woman Tatiana Lewis and her husband say were supporters of Donald Trump but tell 47 ABC they voted for Senator Marco Rubio on Tuesday.

“I am a lady.” Says Lewis. “I don’t like the way he talks…the way he describes himself to other people. I like the gentleman, so my last chance, my last minute was for Rubio.”

Numbers from a recent poll find Trump to be ahead in the Republican primary, followed by Senator Rubio and Senator Ted Cruz.

“I believe it will be an enormous mistake to nominate Donald Trump and so I speak to unity for Republicans that let’s come together and stand together behind the conservative principles behind the free market principles and constitutional liberties that we believe in.” Senator Cruz said Tuesday.

Temperanceville man James Maddox has his eyes on another candidate. Maddox says Dr. Ben Carson, currently neck and neck in Virginia with Governor John Kasich, can count on his vote.

“Sometimes you pay more attention to the barking dog than to the quiet one, and I just think Ben has a common sense approach and you know, that quiet demeanor that he’s going to listen to what’s going on.” Explains Maddox.

As for Airee Watson, she’s with former Secretary of the State Hillary Clinton.

“It’s great to, you know, set new milestones within history and it would be great to see our first female president and I think she is…she’s got the right team behind her.” Says Watson.

Watson also adds, she believes Clinton’s time in office makes her the more qualified candidate over Senator Bernie Sanders. Numbers find him falling behind Clinton in the latest numbers.

On Tuesday, Senator Sanders said “Say ‘no’ to Wall Street and billionaires buying elections. Today is a day that people can stand up and say no to a rigged economy where Americans are working longer hours for lower wages and almost all of the income and wealth in the country is going to the top 1 percent.”

Debra Wharton, second vice-chair of the Accomack County Democratic Committee, says while members of the committee could not tell 47 ABC who they voted for individually, either democratic candidates could lead the country.

“I believe in what they believe in terms of human rights, in terms of racial equality, in terms of economic prosperity. All those things are things that are consistent with my beliefs and my philosophy.” Says Wharton.

Polls in Virginia close at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
