Smyrna’s Season Comes To Unpleasant End

The Smyrna boys basketball’s season came to an end on Sunday when they fell to Mt. Pleasant in the DIAA State Quarterfinals 53-45. The Eagles fell behind early and were never able to completely get back over the hump.

The Green Knights came out on fire to open the game, connecting on a couple shots from the outside while attacking the offense glass for some easy put backs. The Eagles on the other hand were ice cold from the field. Smyrna would find themselves down 13-5 after the first quarter before they finally got going. Caleb Matthews would connect on back to back jumpers to get it started, followed by a long ball from Dy’Mere Richardson. Once they got back in the game, Mt. Pleasant would fire right back. They sparked the run with a couple baskets before coming up big defensively to. A block on Richardson would start a break, that ended with a hard foul on the Eagles Jerry Williams. The refs would rule it a flagrant foul, ejecting him from the game. Smyrna would then find themselves without their big body down low, and be down 24-15 a the break. In the second half, Ja’vier Worthy would get his team going by knocking down a couple straight 3’s followed by a strong take to the hoop. The team would be able to cut the deficit all the way down to just 4, but they were never able to get completely back over the hump.
