MD Ag. dept. reminds residents that “manure happens”

The Maryland Department of Agriculture is reminding us all about how farmers are keeping manure from ending up in streams, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay through their manure happens campaign.

According to the department, Phosphorus Management Tool regulations are being phased in over the next several years. Maryland’s nutrient management program bans the spreading of manure on fields over the winter. Yesterday was the first time this year that farmers are allowed to recycle manure complied during winter as crop fertilizer.

In addition, farmers are required to incorporate or inject manure into soil within 48 hours. The department says this helps decrease surface runoff, improves nutrient retention and cuts-down those less than desirable odors.
