Man arrested for reportedly car jacking Berlin woman on Route 50

Troopers in Maryland say, a Bishopville man has been arrested after carjacking a Berlin woman on Route 50.
According to Maryland State Police, on Thursday around 1:30 PM 33-year-old Shynika Bowen reported her vehicle stolen to the Berlin Barrack. She reportedly told police just moments before, she and 32-year-old Damian Hitchens of Bishopville began arguing while she drove east bond on US Route 50 in the area of MD Route 346. During the argument, Hitchens reportedly kicked the windshield causing it to crack. Bowen told troopers she then reportedly pulled over and called 911. Once on the right shoulder, Hitchens reportedly began kicking the steering wheel subsequently hitting Bowen on her right hand. She then reportedly got out of her vehicle for fear of her safety in which time Hitchens hopped into the driver’s seat and drove off.
Investigators say, Hitchens drove Bowen’s vehicle to her home on Flower Street and unlawful entry into her residence. He then reportedly left the area on foot and was later located by troopers in the area of the Bay Terrace Apartments. Troopers say, when they attempted to make contact with him he fled on foot and was later located on Maple Avenue where he was taken into custody without further incident.
Once in custody, troopers say a strong odor of an alcohol was detected from Hitchens’ breath. He reportedly refused to perform field sobriety testing and subsequently refused to submit to an alcohol concentration test.
Hitchens was taken before the Snow Hill Commissioner where he’s being held on a $20,000 bond.
