Final repairs for Sandy damage headed to Crisfield

Hurricane Sandy ravaged Crisfield, Md., now almost three and half years later, two projects have been scheduled to fix the last of the damage. Tuesday, Somerset County Commissioners approved the bids from two separate companies to do so.
Out of the two, arguably the most important project is replacing the bulkhead, the structure that protects the land from eroding into the Chesapeake Bay, near the main city dock.
“Without replacing that there’s the risk of land behind the bulk head actually going into the Chesapeake Bay there,” said Gary Pusey, the planning and zoning director for Somerset County.
Crisfield Mayor Kim Lawson agrees about the importance of the bulkhead.
Pusey said not only will the bulkhead near the dock be replaced, but the section of the bulkhead to the west will be replaced as well.
The other project, will be improving drainage on the some of Crisfield’s main streets.
“The streets were not in good condition before sandy, the salt water getting into the pavement has caused problems and we do have money to do resurfacing and also to improve the drainage along the roads there,” Pusey said.
Pusey explained they’ll achieve this by building up the roads, and putting up curbs and guttering.
Both projects are expected to be completed by the end of June.
