Felton teacher named “teacher who makes a difference”

When you think back to high school, you may remember taking a family and consumer science course or something similar. For one class in Delaware, it was not a typical Monday.

47ABC surprised Shanann Schmal with a “Teachers Who Makes A Difference Award” sponsored by 47ABC and Accurate Optical on Monday morning.

Schmal teaches grades nine through twelve at Lake Forest High School and is relatively new at teaching.

Last month marked her second year teaching, not including student teaching 1st grade.

Schmal says one of the most important things new teachers can do is get to know their students.

“You have to let them know that they care.” Says Schmal. “I think they all know that I care about them [her students] I worry about them all the time, I am here for them whenever they need me. You just have to be there for them, you have to get to know them.”
