Cheswold pedestrian crash under investigation, one injured

Troopers say they are investigating a serious crash in Cheswold, that injured a pedestrian.

Delaware State Police say just after 12:30 AM on Tuesday, 25-year-old Tabitha Abbott was driving a 2009 Nissan Altima southbound on Route 13 in Cheswold, coming up to Messina Hill Road. According to the report, while driving, Abbott noticed a man standing in the road between the left and right lanes.

Police say Abbott then swerved to the left, in an attempt to avoid hitting the man, but he stepped in front of her vehicle. The left front bumper of Abbott’s car then apparently hit the pedestrian, sending him into the right lane. Abbott was apparently able to stop, just south of the pedestrian.

Police say Kent County Paramedics treated the pedestrian at the scene, before EMS rushed him to Kent General Hospital, where he is currently admitted with serious injuries. At this time, the name of the 27-year-old Dover man is being withheld, pending the notification of his next of kin.

Troopers say alcohol use on the part of the victim, is being considered as a factor in this crash. Tabitha Abbott, who was apparently wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was not injured.

This crash reportedly remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
