Cambridge may get rid of city dispatch center

Cambridge may soon be have all of its police dispatch operations be handled by the county. Monday night the city council heard a proposal that would save the city roughly $200,000 a year in cost reductions.

Currently, the city’s 911 calls already go to the Dorchester County dispatch center, but then have to be sent to the Cambridge police dispatch center. The new proposal would remove that last step.

As part of the consolidation, eight city dispatcher jobs would be lost and four new county dispatch jobs would be created.

The city says if employees are in good standing, they would be able to either transfer to one of those four jobs, transfer to a different job with the city, or retire.
