April Looks to Start on the Cool Side

This is no April Fools joke, the first week or two of April will likely end up below average. The average high temperature for early April is around 62 degrees, but there may be a few days in early April where high temperatures stay in the 40s and 50s. And you probably won’t have to go too far north to run into some April snow.

April 1st itself looks to be a very warm day with highs reaching the mid and upper 70s with a chance for scattered showers and a possible thunderstorm. But as we head into the weekend (April 2nd-3rd), much cooler air will filter into the area behind a passing cold front. It looks like reinforcing shots of chilly air will continue to move in every few days for the first couple of weeks of April.

This type of pattern isn’t too uncommon, March and April are still transition months when Mother Nature is still determining whether its time to let go of winter or not. It’s not too uncommon for Delmarva to experience cooler air in April, but March has already had several 70 degree days. Due to this, the flowers and spring plants are blossoming earlier than normal and are in danger of potentially dying if temperatures fall to around freezing at night. The National Weather Service in Wakefield, VA says they will issue frost and freeze warnings/advisories starting April 1st if needed, which is earlier than when they would normally issue them.

So if you haven’t planted outdoors for the spring yet, I would say to wait just a little bit longer. If you’ve already started, then be sure to follow the weather closely and cover your plants if temperatures drop at or below freezing.

It does appear that by mid-April more long lasting warmth will begin to build into the area.
