UPDATE: Flu outbreak continues at Del. prison

A spokesperson for the Department of Corrections says there is a confirmed flu outbreak at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.  The DOC says that tests were conducted and 18 specimens tested positive for the flu virus.  There are also reportedly another 6 tests with pending results.

In an attempt to limit the virus from spreading any further, the DOC says they are offering screenings to the inmates as well as educating them on the importance of accepting the flu vaccine.  Voluntary screening will also be offered to staff at the facility according to a spokesperson.

Due to the outbreak, the Department of Corrections says they will be cancelling all visits, programs, volunteer work, commissary, and chapel services until further notice.  In addition, the spokesperson says that the gym will be closed and all unnecessary institutional movement will be halted.

The DOC adds that all court/police committals will be diverted to JTVCC in the mean time.  Court schedules are set to remain on its normal schedule.
