Update: Brother of former Del. teacher has “no comment” on guilty plea

47 ABC caught Richard Howell on camera in his last moments as a free man walking into the Kent County Superior Court on Friday.

The former Caesar Rodney High School wrestling coach and teacher was indicted on fifty felony counts for a sexual relationship he had with a female student. He pleaded guilty to six of the counts in an agreement with the state on Friday.

The charge for the first three counts is “the sexual abuse of a child by a person in a position of trust in the first degree.” The charge for other three counts is fourth degree rape.

Howell was arrested last January after the girl who was seventeen at the time, came forward claiming the two of them had sex over a period of several months in 2014. According to the student, the encounters were at Howell’s house and at the school.

Under his plea, Howell is facing a minimum of six years in jail with a maximum of one-hundred and twenty. He’ll also be a registered tier 3 sex offender and can’t have contact with the female student or anyone under the age of eighteen.

47 ABC caught up with Howell’s twin brother and asking if he thought the former wrestling coach made the right decision taking the plea…his response was, “no comment.”
