Taxpayers could be held liable in MD suspensions

A warning for taxpayers. If you hire someone to prepare your taxes and they have questionable practices, it appears you might be held ultimately responsible. That’s because at the end of the day you have to sign off on the return.

On Thursday we told you that Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot suspended the processing of tax returns from several tax services around the state, including Charles Multi Services in Pocomoke City.

47 ABC spoke to a representative with the Comptrollers office today to see what would happen to those held responsible. If your preparer had their processing privileges suspended, you apparently could be asked to appear in court or go through arbitration. But each questionable return would be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, as for your tax returns we’re told the state will handle them at their earliest convenience.
